Abstract

As an iteration of the main design from the summer using frameles motors, Gui considered a design using a large ring magnet, a piece of iron to direct magnetic flux and a block of steel on the worm shaft to create a magnetic spring instead of using Belleville washers or flexures. The promise of the design is that it removes contact points and allows the novel sensing technique of using a field strength sensor to determine the spring force and therefore the output torque.

Reasons the design wasn't pursued

The team decided that the design was to far outside the realm of their experience and would require too much work in developing sensing rather than developing using established technology, so the design was left in favor or more conventional technology.
